Weather satellite images from Shotatton

Message from Gary Wann, for anyone with a really serious interest in the weather.

Now that the weather seems to have taken a turn for the worse, I'm sure that people will be taking more notice of the weather forecast!  I run a simple weather satellite reception and decoding station here at Shotatton which shows processed pictures from the 3 remaining polar orbiting NOAA weather satellites.

The satellites pass over Western Europe twice a day and provide infra-red and visual images (infra-red only at night as it's too dark for visual images) and these images can be further processed to provide cloud temperature and precipitation information.

My images are published as a page on the Royal Air Force Amateur Radio Society website that I run for the society - see link below.  Although the 'station location' says Shrewsbury, these images are from Shotatton (just to the NE of the crossroads in fact!) and in the worse case will only be about 7 hours old.

More information about the satellites is available on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website.

OK, it's not the BBC and these images don't provide a forecast unless you know what you are looking for, but I do find them very interesting.

Please feel free to forward this email if you think it might be of interest to the Ruyton XI Towns mailing list.

Regards
Gary Wann

P.S. Still absolutely no chance of high-speed broadband being provided via the Knockin exchange.  Getting a blistering 3.5 mbs download and 0.32 mbs upload here on the outer edges of the known world!
