Welcome to the December issue of the kinokulture cinema newsletter.

With the end of the year drawing closer we have a few news updates.

Over the past two years we have been tremendously grateful for the support of Film Hub North West Central via the BFI with funds through the National Lottery. This support has enabled us to extend our range of films and bring many more documentaries, Foreign Language and British Films to our audiences. In 2018 the Regional Film Hubs will be shuffling around and we will be moving over to work with Film Hub Midlands. We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Sally & Alison at Film Hub NWC and big hello to Eleanor, Ian & Amy at Film Hub Midlands.

We would also like to congratulate Oswestry Film society on another successful year of screenings. They have now chosen their next season of films which starts on January 16th with My cousin Rachel.

Programming is now underway for the Borderlines Film Festival in February & March and we are also very pleased to have been invited to be a new venue for WOW (Wales One World Film Festival) which follows on from Borderlines so do keep a look out for more news on these events.

So here it is December has arrived and the Festive Season is almost upon us bringing with it a wonderful selection of cinematic treats.

When a teenage girl is found dead in the freezing, desolate landscape of Wind River, Wyoming, the horrific truth behind a quiet town begins to creep to the surface.

"Out here, you survive or you surrender."

Wind River Indian Reservation is a harsh place to live. Located in a remote corner of the USA, its residents must become hardened to the wind, snow, and freezing temperatures… or risk becoming victims to the desolation.

When local trapper, Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner) stumbles upon the body of a teenage girl, it's clear that she wasn't killed by Wind River's violent weather. Sprawling barefoot upon the white, icy ground, the bloodstained snow suggests there was a brutal struggle.

FBI agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen) is assigned to the case, and braces herself against the hostile environment and bitterness of the people in the town. With few police officers to support her, she has no choice but to rely on Lambert for help. As the two try to piece together what happened, they begin to uncover a dark and twisted nightmare of a horrible evil lurking in the quiet town.

Director Taylor Sheridan, who starred in Sons of Anarchy, won Best Director at Cannes Film Festival for Wind River. Renner (AvengersArrival) stars as the sultry, tight-lipped recluse and Olsen (AvengersCaptain America: Civil War) is the tough agent who's hungry for justice.

STATES OF DANGER AND DECEIT:EUROPEAN POLITICAL THRILLERS IN THE 1970s

is a touring season of films curated by Andy Willis, Reader in Film Studies at the University of Salford and Senior Visiting Curator: Film at HOME, Manchester, presented as part of BFI THRILLER with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from The National Lottery.

The ideological turmoil that marked the late 1960s and led to events such as May '68 in Paris gave way in the 1970s to a more strident politics that involved stark contrasts between left and right. During this period those within the establishment and those without seemed willing to act with violence to force the changes they sought for society. In response to this political moment a number of European filmmakers turned to the format of the thriller - sometimes seriously, sometimes with humour - offering as it did the opportunity to explore conspiracies, authoritarian regimes, and political violence.

Z

A pulse-pounding political thriller, Greek expatriate director Costa-Gavras's was one of the cinematic sensations of the late sixties, and remains among the most vital dispatches from that hallowed era of filmmaking. This Academy Award winner—loosely based on the 1963 assassination of Greek left-wing activist Gregoris Lambrakis—stars Yves Montand as a prominent politician and doctor whose public murder amid a violent demonstration is covered up by military and government officials; Jean-Louis Trintignant is the tenacious magistrate who's determined not to let them get away with it. Featuring kinetic, rhythmic editing, Raoul Coutard's expressive vérité photography, and Mikis Theodorakis's unforgettable, propulsive score, Z is a technically audacious and emotionally gripping masterpiece.

WHO CAN YOU TRUST?

Thrillers get our minds racing as well as our pulses, bringing the twists and turns of psychological and political intrigue together with edge-of-the seat action. We love to be in the grip of uncertainty, and to see our suspicions played out to their perilous conclusions. As well as offering the chance to revel in the work of masters of suspense like Alfred Hitchcock and enjoy the sheer thrill of danger and deception writ large on the big screen, this season is an opportunity to reflect on the way the thriller has evolved to reflect our personal fears in times of political uncertainty and social change.

The Wages Of Fear

Henri-Georges Clouzot more than earns his title as the 'French Hitchcock' in The Wages of Fear. Based on Georges Arnaud's 1950 Le salaire de la peur, and serving as the basis for William Friedkin's 1977 The Sorcerer, this adaptation brought Clouzot the international fame necessary to make Les Diaboliques, and marked him out as a master filmmaker.

In an unnamed South American country, four shady characters find themselves thrust together on a dangerous job. They are each offered $2,000 to drive two trucks of highly volatile nitroglycerine to a remote oil field. One truck is manned by the happy-go-lucky Luigi (Fulco Lulli) and calculating Bimba (Peter Van Eyck), the other by aging hood Jo (Charles Vanel) and the young Corsican Mario (Yves Montand in one of his first roles). Tension builds between the men as they inch their way over the treacherous mountain roads, in the knowledge that the slightest jolt could have explosive consequences.

'The Wages of Fear has no superior in the field of action-suspense' The Guardian

Director: : Henri-Georges Clouzot

France/Italy 1953

Cast: Yves Montand, Charles Vanel, Peter van Eyck, Folco Lulli, Véra Clouzot, William Tubbs

The beginning of the end of Communism in the USSR is the unlikely subject of this absolutely hilarious comedy of terrors from Armando Iannucci - the mastermind behind the immortal Alan PartridgeThe Thick Of It and In the Loop.

In the days following Stalin's collapse, his core team of ministers tussle for control; some want positive change in the Soviet Union, others have more sinister motives. Their one common trait? They're all just desperately trying to remain alive.

A film that combines comedy, drama, pathos and political manoeuvring, The Death of Stalin is just the film you need when you feel that history and politics are getting to you.

"Iannucci's brand of political satire is applied to one of the darkest chapters in modern history, with sensational results. The Lives Of Others with laughs, it's farcical, frightening and a timely reminder that things could always be worse."

***** Empire Magazine

"This is classic comedy gold, in many ways reminiscent of the old Monty Python show sketches skewering politicians, but with a slightly more serious spin."

A YOUNG GIRL'S ENCHANTED PRESENT LEADS HER ON A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS ADVENTURE IN THIS BEAUTIFUL CLASSICAL BALLET, DANCED TO TCHAIKOVSKY'S MAGNIFICENT SCORE.

The young Clara creeps downstairs on Christmas Eve to play with her favourite present – a Nutcracker doll. But the mysterious magician Drosselmeyer is waiting to sweep her off on a magical adventure. After defeating the Mouse King, the Nutcracker and Clara travel through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy treats them to a wonderful display of dances. Back home, Clara thinks she must have been dreaming– but doesn't she recognize Drosselmeyer's nephew?

Peter Wright's nigh-on definitive production for The Royal Ballet ranks as one of the most enduring and enchanting versions of The Nutcracker. With its festive period setting, dancing snowflakes and enchanting stage magic, Lev Ivanov's 1892 ballet has become the perfect Christmas entertainment, with Tchaikovsky's sumptuous, sugar-spun music the most recognizable of all ballet scores.

Loosely based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the ballet opens with a lively Christmas party, its Victorian setting captured in opulent detail by Julia Trevelyan Oman's designs. Wright's choreography ingeniously incorporates surviving fragments of the ballet's original material, including the sublime pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. But in emphasizing the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker Prince, the production also gains a touching subtext of first love.

Choreography: Peter Wright (After Lev Ivanov)

Music: Pyotr Il'Yich Tchaikovsky

AKA our alternative Christmas film! Writer/director Shane Black has a reputation for setting his films at Christmas, be they buddy cop movies (Lethal Weapon) or super hero adventures (Iron Man 3). Robert Downey Jr and Val Kilmer star in this quite bonkers L.A. set murder mystery involving a petty thief, a struggling actress and a private eye. To say any more would be spoiling the fun – except to say it's full of Black's trade mark whip-smart dialogue, black humour and unexpected plot twists. If you enjoyed his The Nice Guys last year, you're sure to love this.

The Day Of The Jackal

In 1971, Frederick Forsythe shot to bestseller status with his debut novel, The Day of the Jackal – taut, utterly plausible, almost documentarian in its realism and attention to detail. Two years later, director Fred Zinnemann (High Noon) turned a gripping novel into a nail-biting cinematic experience.

August 1962: the latest attempt on the life of French President Charles de Gaulle by the far right paramilitary organisation, the OAS, ends in chaos, with its architect-in-chief dead at the hands of a firing squad. Demoralised and on the verge of bankruptcy, the OAS leaders meet in secret to plan their next move. In a last desperate attempt to eliminate de Gaulle, they opt to employ the services of a hired assassin from outside the fold. Enter the Jackal (Edward Fox, Gandhi): charismatic, calculating, cold as ice. As the Jackal closes in on his target, a race against the clock ensues to identify and put a stop to a killer whose identity, whereabouts and modus operandi are completely unknown.

Co-starring a plethora of talent from both sides of the Channel, including Michael Lonsdale (Munich), Derek Jacobi (The Odessa File) and Cyril Cusack (1984) and featuring striking cinematography by Jean Tournier (Moonraker), The Day of the Jackal remains one of the greatest political thrillers of all time.

We have a very special Doc of The Month for December Emer Reynolds' award-winning and critically acclaimed documentary The Farthest which tells the story of NASA's iconic Voyager mission and its Golden Record.

It's one of humankind's greatest achievements.  More than 12 billion miles away a tiny spaceship is leaving our Solar System and entering the void of deep space – the first human-made object ever to do so.  Launched in August 1977, Voyager has defied all the odds, survived countless near misses and almost 40 years later continues to beam revolutionary information across unimaginable distances with less computing power than a modern hearing aid.  It's estimated that Voyager's nuclear generator will last another decade before the lights finally go out.  But this little craft will travel on for millions of years, carrying a Golden Record bearing recordings and images of life on Earth.  It could very well outlive humanity and our creations and be the only evidence that we ever existed.

An entirely Irish production, The Farthest includes interviews with 30 of the original scientists and engineers who built and flew the ground breaking mission, never-seen-before archive footage from inside NASA along with spectacular CGI, designed and created by Irish talent.

The film not only celebrates these magnificent machines, the people who built them and the vision that propelled them farther than anyone could have ever hoped but it also explores what it is to be human and the mysteries that define our existence.

"The two Voyager space probes are the subjects of this appropriately epic documentary, full of lavish visuals, brain-frying statistics and infectiously enthusiastic Nasa boffins." *** The Times

"It's rare for a film to make one swell with pride about something he or she had no direct hand in, but "The Farthest" accomplishes that feat with aplomb." Variety

Join us to celebrate the 90th Anniversary year of this magnificent film:

With its dizzying depiction of a futuristic cityscape and alluring female robot, Metropolis is among the most famous of all German films and the mother of sci-fi cinema (an influence on Blade Runner and Star Wars, among countless other films). Directed by the legendary Fritz Lang (MDas Testament des Dr. MabuseThe Big Heat, etc.), its jaw-dropping production values, iconic imagery, and modernist grandeur – it was described by Luis Buñuel as "a captivating symphony of movement" – remain as powerful as ever.

Drawing on – and defining – classic sci-fi themes, Metropolis depicts a dystopian future in which society is thoroughly divided in two: while anonymous workers conduct their endless drudgery below ground their rulers enjoy a decadent life of leisure and luxury. When Freder (Gustav Fröhlich) ventures into the depths in search of the beautiful Maria (Brigitte Helm in her debut role), plans of rebellion are revealed and a Maria-replica robot is programmed by mad inventor Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) and master of Metropolis Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel) to incite the workers into a self-destructive riot.

Director: Fritz Lang
