Ruth's Bookclub

Over the summer Ruth's bookclub read Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

Ruth says - Based on Dicken's David Copperfield, this is a modern reimagining set in the Appalachian region of America, where Barbara Kingsolver herself lives; an area facing real economic struggles and poverty. It is a tale with weight and emotional depth. Heartbreaking, frustrating, an utter slog of a read at times, but what an incredible work of fiction - based in truth - and a searing indictment of big pharma's vice-grip on modern America.

As a bookclub choice, this was so good. It generated strong opinions, emotional reactions and one of the best discussions we've ever had. Demon Copperhead is an astonishing achievement, and such a worthy Women's Prize winner.

After a brilliant event with JL Blackhurst, this month we have been reading Three Card Murder by JL Blackhurst.
