The Nettle Dress (12A)

Wednesday 11th October  7:30pm  (SOLD OUT)

Thursday 2nd November  7:30pm

Textile artist Allan Brown spends seven years making a dress by hand just from the fibre of locally foraged stinging nettles. This is 'hedgerow couture', the greenest of slow fashion but also his medicine. It's how Allan survives the passing of his wife, leaving him and their four children bereft, and how he finds a beautiful way to honour her.Stunningly filmed by award-winning documentary maker Dylan Howitt, The Nettle Dress follows Allan's journey through seasons and years, foraging, spinning, weaving, cutting and sewing the cloth, before finally sharing a healing vision of the dress back in the woods where the nettles were picked, worn by one of his daughters.A labour of love in the truest sense, The Nettle Dress is a modern-day fairytale and hymn to the healing power of nature and slow craft. It's one story representing a huge groundswell of people rediscovering the joys of making. Actor Mark Rylance called the film "Exquisite and inspiring, beautiful and helpful for anyone suffering loss or grief".

Director: Dylan Howitt

This story takes us on a tumultuous journey from the height of T. Rex mania in 1970s Liverpool to the present-day poignancy of what would have been Marc Bolan's 75th birthday. It captures the heady exhilaration of glam rock mania through the experiences of a group of over-excited kids from a local children's home before a devastating road accident changes their lives forever. Years later, and still clinging to the adoration of her childhood idol, survivor Penny takes best friend and fellow Marc Bolan fan to visit his shrine in London but a chance encounter there catapults her back to the horror she had tried so hard to forget. Light-hearted comedy and supernatural chills abound in this inspirational story that explores the enduring legacy of childhood trauma and the life-affirming power of music.

A Haunting in Venice" is set in eerie, post-World War II Venice on All Hallows' Eve and is a terrifying mystery featuring the return of the celebrated sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Now retired and living in self-imposed exile in the world's most glamorous city, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.

Reuniting many of the filmmakers behind 2017's "Murder on the Orient Express" and 2022's "Death on the Nile," the film is directed by Kenneth Branagh with a screenplay by Oscar® nominee Michael Green ("Logan") based upon Agatha Christie's novel Hallowe'en Party. The producers are Kenneth Branagh, Judy Hofflund, Ridley Scott, and Simon Kinberg, with Louise Killin, James Prichard, and Mark Gordon serving as executive producers.

A brilliant acting ensemble portrays a cast of unforgettable characters, including Kenneth Branagh, Kyle Allen ("Rosaline"), Camille Cottin ("Call My Agent"), Jamie Dornan ("Belfast"), Tina Fey ("30 Rock"), Jude Hill ("Belfast"), Ali Khan ("6 Underground"), Emma Laird ("Mayor of Kingstown"), Kelly Reilly ("Yellowstone"), Riccardo Scamarcio ("Caravaggio's Shadow"), and recent Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh ("Everything Everywhere All at Once").

The Day Of The Jackal (15)

Tuesday 17th October 7:30pm

Anniversary showing of the most gripping and intelligent of political thrillers

Incredibly it's 50 years since this cat and mouse classic came out, but it's lost nothing of its never-stop tension.

An underground French paramilitary group is intent on eliminating president Charles de Gaulle, but when numerous attempts on his life fail, they hire the infamous hit man known as "The Jackal" (Edward Fox). As the enigmatic assassin builds towards shooting de Gaulle, he coolly takes out any problematic people along the way. Meanwhile, savvy Parisian police detective Lebel (Micharl Lonsdale) is the cat on the mouse's tail as he tries to solve the mystery of the one-step-ahead killer's identity.

Based on the equally classic Frederick Forsyth page-turner book, Fox is superbly cast as the loner, the cold, suave, mysterious Jackal, who sets up his plan and goes on to improvise as he nears his target.

Superby directed, this is in modern parlance like Mission Impossible, where you see snippets of his plan forming and how it plays out, and a talented cast ensures the film is wire-taut throughout.

Please note the film starts at 7:30pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings

Maigret (15)

Thursday 26th October 7:30pm

The legendary Gerard Depardieu brings to remarkable life one of the most beloved characters from 20th century crime fiction in MAIGRET, the masterfully-directed and hugely entertaining new film from multi award-winning writer/director Patrice Leconte ('Monsieur Hire', 'Ridicule', 'The Girl On The Bridge'), based on Georges Simenon's internationally best-selling novels.

Paris, 1953. The body of a beautiful young woman is discovered at Place Ventimille, dressed in an elegant evening gown. There is nothing to identify her, and no witnesses. Pensive and world-weary Inspector Jules Maigret (Depardieu) endeavours to piece together her story, and in doing so uncovers details about her past and character. In his enquiries, he encounters Betty (Jade Labeste), a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to the victim, but who also reminds him of one even closer to his own life…

Simenon (and Leconte's) formidable protagonist - a French counterpart to Agatha Christie's Poirot and P.D. James' Dalgiesh - has been brought to the screen before, but Depardieu leaves an indelible stamp on the character, bringing tenderness and dignity to a man prepared to listen before he speaks, and to stand up for those without a voice.

"Patrice Leconte's movie emphasises its sombre tone, and even though the plot's contrivances glare through the darkness, the overall result is satisfying — a magnetic star and a rich atmosphere." **** Sunday Times

Hugo (U)

Tuesday 7th November 7:30pm
?

HUGO will tickle your fancy as winter creeps in, a heart-warming film for all ages that's not what you expect from the great director Martin Scorsese, the man who brought us the likes of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas.

It's happy, it's sad, there's a detective story, action and the innocence of young romance, it's funny – and it's fun, with the added joys of a great cast and a tip of the hat to film history.

In  the late 20's, in Paris, the orphaned Hugo (Asa Butterfield – also excellent as the Boy With Striped Pyjamas) is a lonely child who lives hidden behind the walls of the central railway station, keeping the clocks working.

Hugo is trying to fix a mysterious automaton left to him by his father (Jude Law), a watchmaker who taught Hugo how to fix all sorts of gadgets before he died in a fire in his workshop. Hugo steals parts for his project from the bitter and cranky toy shop owner Papa George (Ben Kingsley). But there's more to Papa George than meets the eye.

Add in the cruel station inspector Sacha Baron Cohen, and Hugo's alcoholic uncle (Ray Winstone) who returns to haunt his nephew.

Hugo, which is cinematically beautiful, is also one of those films that can entertain on different levels for different ages.

The Pigeon Tunnel (12A)

Thursday 9th November 7:30pm

Academy Award-winning documentarian Errol Morris pulls back the curtain on the storied life and career of former British spy David Cornwell — better known as John le Carré, author of such classic espionage novels as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Constant Gardener.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Cold War leading into present day, the film spans six decades as le Carré delivers his final and most candid interview, punctuated with rare archival footage and dramatized vignettes. "The Pigeon Tunnel" is a deeply human and engaging exploration of le Carré's extraordinary journey and the paper-thin membrane between fact and fiction.

"Despite the safeguards put up by le Carré, Morris navigates his intellectual landmines. What results is a very memorable documentary that will continue to showcase why John le Carré was not only a one-of-a-kind talent but an irreplaceable personality." ******** Next Best Picture

In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He had staged a "great escape" from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary.

It was a story that captured the imagination of the world as Bernie embodied the defiant, "can-do" spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course, it wasn't the whole story. It was an inspirational but sanitised retelling of one man's need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war.

Bernie's adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson) – THE GREAT ESCAPER celebrates their enduring love but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation.

Africa In Focus : Mami Wata (12A)

Wednesday 22nd November  7:30pm

When the harmony in a village is threatened by outside elements, two sisters must fight to save their people and restore the glory of a mermaid goddess to the land.

Filmgoers outside of Africa may never have heard of Mami Wata, the titular supernatural being in CJ Obasi's new movie. Mami Wata hasn't quite attained the status of, say, Norse or Greek gods, whose pantheons were perpetuated first by patriarchy and more recently by the blockbuster industry. Thankfully, Obasi, who also wrote this film's screenplay, has made it so that no introduction to Mami Wata is necessary to grasp and enjoy this film, the first feature from a homegrown Nigerian filmmaker to screen at Sundance.

In this telling, Mami Wata is the de facto ruler of the fictional coastal West African village of Iyi. Her intermediary, Mama Efe (Rita Edochie), channels her will to the people, who accept this system until the death of a child upsets the balance of things. Mama Efe's headstrong daughter Zinwe is displeased by her mother's inability and/or refusal to bring the child back to life. Despite the pleas of adopted sibling Prisca (Evelyne Ily Juhen), Zinwe expresses her anger openly. But she will not be the only one demanding change. A cohort led by the noisy, reckless Jabi (Kelechi Udegbe) is on its way.

The film's dialogue is a version of West African pidgin that has been stylised, which perhaps explains its stilted nature in parts. It is Udegbe's entry into the film that brings the Nigerian variation of the language to the picture, restoring that language's lilt to ears familiar with it.

"The first homegrown Nigerian feature film to screen at Sundance, this chronicle of the trials and tribulations of the goddess Mami Wata is an audacious, ambitious thrill."  Sight And Sound

"The film casts a spell, and the spell persists to the end." ****. Roger Ebert

Our River...Our Sky (12A)

Thursday 23rd November  7:30pm

Sara is a single mother and a novelist. As her daughter Reema sleeps fitfully against the not-so-distant noise of mortars and gunfire, she's unable to write. Surrounded by trauma and devastation, she scours the internet for news of the city's death toll, trying to keep track of the attacks. When her closest friend and neighbour, Sabiha, a former actress and a Christian, is forced into exile, Sara begins to fight back and recover a sense of defiance. But as the random killing escalates and gets closer to home, she begins to look for a way out for herself and her daughter…

Sara and her neighbours invite us into their everyday lives as their world fragments and they attempt to renew a fragile sense of hope for a better future. Through the chaos and destruction, the residents never let their ambitions and desires for the future fade. Yet, they can't help but contemplate leaving Iraq, and are forced to ask a painful question – who does Baghdad really belong to?

An impeccably acted, affecting and human drama, the film's cast deservedly scooped the Best Ensemble award at last year's BIFAs, and its easy to see why.

"This is the exact opposite of most modern Hollywood films, which are a celebration of death. "Our River . . . Our Sky"'s focus is on life, in all its imperfect, painful, hysterical, messy, complicated, upsetting glory." Critics Notebook

Nobody Has To Know (12A)

Friday 24th & Saturday 25th November 7:30pm

Sunday 26th November. 2:00pm  (Subtitled for the Hard Of Hearing)

Shot entirely at locations across the Isle of Lewis, this heartfelt new romantic drama is written and directed by renowned César Award nominated Belgian actor and filmmaker Bouli Lanners (The Night of the 12th) and co-directed by BAFTA nominee Tim Mielants (The Responder).

Memories tell us the story of who we are. If those memories vanish, whose stories will take their place? Phil (Bouli Lanners) is a middle-aged farmhand working on a remote part of the Isle of Lewis. Affably refusing to talk about his past life back in Belgium to the tight-knit local community, he finds his people amongst those propping up the local bar rather than in the devout congregation of the Calvinist free church.

When he suffers amnesia following a stroke,  a lonely local woman, Millie (Game of Thrones' Michelle Fairley) helps him acclimatise back to his life and claims they were once in a secret relationship before his accident. This is a fragile lie that Millie must protect to keep their burgeoning romance alive, but at what cost?

"Lanners confidently navigates a tale of guilty secrets, regrets and longing to deliver a quietly touching, unabashed weepie." Screen International

Made In Wales: A Year In A Field (12A)

Wednesday 29th November  7:30pm

BAFTA-winning documentarian Christopher Morris reflects upon human existence, its relationship to the environment and the urgent need for compassion and transformation.

Weathering the elements in the centre of a field in West Cornwall is the Longstone, a natural relic that has quietly witnessed 4,000 years of tumultuous history. Morris' elegiac, meditative, yet profoundly important film is the record of a year in the life of the monolith, beginning on Winter Solstice 2020, as the order of the natural world began unravelling around the globe and the threat of extreme climate change became a reality. Beautifully shot, with a richly layered sound design, the film meditates on the passage of time through its appreciation of nature, highlighting the subtle changes of the seasons, but also the need to act in order to battle man-made changes that will forever change our planet.

We have tried to keep the increase as low as possible as we know that the cost of living crisis is impacting on us all and hope that you still feel that we offer great value and will continue to visit us.

Gift Vouchers & CEA Cards

To order Gift Vouchers for your cinema loving family & friends please email or call us to place an order.

The CEA Card is a national card scheme developed for UK cinemas by the UK Cinema Association (UKCA).

The Card enables a disabled cinema guest to receive a complimentary ticket for someone to go with them when they visit a participating cinema.

Accessibility

The auditorium is situated on the first floor but sadly due to the building being Grade II listed we have no disabled lift accessibility. There are 20 low rise stairs to the auditorium and wheelchairs/prams can be left downstairs.

Mens, Ladies & a Disabled Wash Room are all located on the ground floor.

We have a loop system and Senheisser Connect system installed and our Sunday matinees have Audio Described subtitles for the Hard Of Hearing.

If you want to discuss your accessibility needs or have a CEA card and require a complimentary ticket for your carer or if you have been given a kinokulture Gift Voucher
please contact us on 01691 238167 to reserve your tickets or email us:
