Mark Forsyth - The Elements of Eloquence

Thursday 28th November 2013 – 7.00pm at Booka

Join Mark Forsyth, bestselling author of The Etymologicon and The Horologicon, as he talks about his new book, The Elements of Eloquence.

In an age unhealthily obsessed with substance, The Elements of Eloquence: How to Turn the Perfect English Phrase is a book on the importance of pure style. From classic poetry to pop lyrics and from the King James Bible to advertising slogans, Mark Forsyth explains the secrets that make a phrase – such as ‘Tiger, tiger, burning bright’, or ‘To be or not to be’ – memorable.

In his inimitably entertaining and witty style  he takes apart famous lines and shows how you too can write like Shakespeare or Oscar Wilde. Whether you’re aiming for literary immortality or just an unforgettable one-liner, The Elements of Eloquence proves that you don’t need to have anything to say – you simply need to say it well.

Mark Forsyth’s The Etymologicon is a Sunday Times Number One bestseller and both The Etymologicon and The Horologicon were BBC Radio 4′s Book of the Week.

Tickets: £8 (redeemable against a hardback copy of The Elements of Eloquence. Refreshments provided).

Please book in advance - for tickets,  call in at the shop, give us a call or send us an email.

If you are unable to attend the event but would like a signed and dedicated copy of  The Elements of Eloquence, please contact us.

Great British Bakes - Mary-Anne Boermans

Wednesday 4th December 2013 - 6.30pm at The Cookery Workshop, Upstairs Downstairs

Join us at The Cookery Workshop, Upstairs Downstairs on Wednesday December 4th as food writer and baker Mary-Anne Boermans talks about and demonstrates recipes from her new book, Great British Bakes.

Mary-Anne was a finalist in the 2011 series of The Great British Bake Off and has been cooking and baking for over 40 years. She is passionate about home cooking and has amassed a library of over 900 cookery books, with an emphasis on traditional British recipes.

In her new book, Great British Bakes, she has delved into the UK’s fine baking history to rediscover the long-forgotten recipes of our past, honed and perfected over centuries and lovingly adapted for use in 21st-century kitchens. Here you will find such tempting delights as Welsh Honey Cake, Lace Meringues, Rich Orange Tart, Butter Buns, Pearl Biscuits and Chocolate Meringue Pie. This very special collection sits confidently among the best of British cookery writing, with recipes that have stood the test of time and that will both surprise and delight for years to come.

We are delighted to be working with Upstairs Downstairs in hosting this event.  Their Cookery Workshop will provide the perfect setting for Mary-Anne to both demonstrate and reveal the story behind some of the bakes.
