Lantern making & parade in Shrewsbury

Lantern makers to be the stars of Shrewsbury Christmas parade

Families are being invited to light up the launch of the Christmas season in Shrewsbury this month by taking part in a spectacular Lantern Parade.

They can come along and make their own lanterns at a special free workshop to be held in the town’s popular Riverside Shopping Centre next Saturday, November 16, from 11am to 4pm.

The streets and shopping centres of Shrewsbury will come to life four days later, on Wednesday, November 20, when the Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Jon Tandy, and the Town Crier, Martin Wood, lead the parade of lanterns as part of the town’s Christmas Cracker event.

The cavalcade of lanterns will wend its way through the town from the Riverside Centre up Pride Hill along Butchers Row, Fish Street and High Street for the 7pm 'switch on'.

The Lantern Workshop, which takes place from 11am to 4pm, is being led by artist Maggie Love who is hoping for a good turnout from across the age range.

She said: “The Lantern Parade through the Town and down High Street is sure to be a magical part of the Christmas Cracker festivities.

“The workshop is open to all ages and will be a great deal of fun for all the family. The event will help everyone get into the festive spirit and I’d encourage everyone to come along.”

“We will be using a unit in the Riverside Centre which is where the actual parade will start from on the Wednesday evening at 6pm.

“It’s open to all though each child must be accompanied by an adult so it will be a family workshop and from past experience adults will love being a part of it.

“We work with willow sticks and will be using them to create a framework for each lantern which will be illuminated by LED lights because it would be unsuitable to have naked flames and the event is absolutely free though you will have to put up a £5 deposit which can be redeemed on return of the LED – the lantern is yours to keep.

“It promises to be a fantastic event and we’re thrilled that the Parade will be starting from the Riverside Centre. It should be a fantastic sight and be a great way to launch Christmas in Shrewsbury.”
