Compensation for roadworks

Message from Colin Case - The Chairman of the Parish Council looks after us!

Letter sent to Severn Trent.

Dear Sirs

Leak Repair

You will be aware that you carried out an emergency repair to a serious water leak in our village between 4th September and 9th September.
My reporting reference was 2002244828 and the "address" of the leak was Brownhill, Ruyton XI Towns, SY4 1LR

We appreciate that the repair was an emergency. We also note that the team who actually fixed it on 7th and 8th September were magnificent – they worked hard and quickly whilst operating with millimetric precision – I commend them for their endeavours.

However, even a cursory examination of the management, planning and administration of the task by your Operations Director or other Senior Manager must surely conclude that expectations could have been higher. I won't go into too much detail, but you will soon appreciate that this mis-management caused chaos in our village. Was the road open, closed, half-open, a bit open or what – for 5 whole days. Takings at our Home Grown Flower and Vegetable Show were seriously impacted, and there were similar detrimental effects on our businesses – and even the Circus.

You may conclude that some sort of compensation for our community is appropriate.

Assuming this is the case, might I suggest that a donation of £500 to our Parish Council be made, so that we can buy a basket-ball hoop and post for the children of the village. We already have a donation of £500 but need matched funding. Collection and installation will be done by local volunteers to minimise costs.

I hope you will treat this suggestion sympathetically – it really was a major disruption.

Finally, can I advise that I make this suggestion as an individual who was involved with monitoring and helping with the repair, rather than in my role as Parish Council Chair. This request does not yet have formal support from our Council, and we must observe the niceties of legislation. The purchase of a basket-ball hoop does have formal backing.

Yours sincerely,
