Dear Blogger

Some great events coming up at BOOKA BOOKSHOP.

** RICHARD HUMPHRIES Under Pressure ------------------------------------------------------------ Tuesday 1st October 7.30pm (doors 7.00pm) Booka
Tuesday 1st October 7.30pm (doors 7.00pm) Booka Get a glimpse into another world and join us for an evening in the company of Richard Humphreys as he talks about his new book Under Pressure, a compelling and entertaining account of what it was like to serve and live on a nuclear submarine during the Cold War. Imagine a world without natural light, where you can barely stand up straight for fear of knocking your head, where you have no idea of where in the world you are or what time of day it is, where you sleep in a coffin-sized bunk and sometimes eat a full roast for breakfast. Now imagine sharing that world with 140 other sweaty bodies, crammed into a 430ft x 33ft steel tube, 300ft underwater, for up to 90 days at a time, with no possibility of escape. And to top it off, a sizeable chunk of your living space is taken up by the most formidably destructive nuclear weapons history has ever known. This is the world of the submariner. This is life under pressure. As a restless and adventurous 18-year-old, Richard Humphreys joined the submarine service in 1985 and went on to serve aboard the nuclear deterrent for five years at the end of the Cold War. Nothing could have prepared him for life beneath the waves. Aside from the claustrophobia and disorientation, there were the prolonged periods of boredom, the constant dread of discovery by the Soviets, and the smorgasbord of rank odours that only a group of poorly-washed and flatulent submariners can unleash. But even in this most pressurised of environments, the consolations were unique: where else could you sit peacefully for hours listening to whale song, orà Based on first-hand experience, Under Pressure is the candid, visceral and incredibly entertaining account of what itÆs like to live, work, sleep, eat û and stay sane û in one of the most extreme man-made environments on the planet. How does a government steal a child and then imprison him? How does it keep it a secret? This story is how. At the age of seventeen, after a childhood in a foster family followed by six years in care homes, Norman Greenwood was given his birth certificate. He learned that his real name was not Norman. It was Lemn Sissay. He was British and Ethiopian. And he learned that his mother had been pleading for his safe return to her since his birth. This is LemnÆs story: a story of neglect and determination, misfortune and hope, cruelty and triumph. Sissay reflects on his childhood, self-expression and Britishness, and in doing so explores the institutional care system, race, family and the meaning of home. Written with all the lyricism and power you would expect from one of the nationÆs best-loved poets, this moving, frank and timely memoir is the result of a life spent asking questions, and a celebration of the redemptive power of creativity. But how many have spent an entire season with the Emperor Penguins in Antarctica? Maybe more, likely less. Lindsay McCrae has û and this is his wonderful and frank story. My Penguin Year recounts BAFTA award-winning cameraman Lindsay McCraeÆs adventure to the end of the Earth, spending a year filming the most resilient creatures in nature. He had to overcome the inevitable sacrifices that came with living his childhood dream; facing down the personal obstacles of being over 15,000km away from the comforts of home almost proved too much. Out of that experience he has written an unprecedented portrait of AntarcticaÆs most extraordinary residents. McCrae filmed the birdsÆ entire life cycle, endured freezing winds and missed the birth of his first son while living isolated on an Antarctic ice shelf. He also captured incredible footage for the hit BBC series Dynasties that was seen by 8 million British people. Lindsay will bring the story of that dramatic year to life with an illustrated talk that is sure to delight and excite as we head deep south to the end of the earth and the world of these extraordinary birds. Brilliant, honest, combative û Eddie Jones is a gigantic yet enigmatic figure in world rugby and a true legend of the game. In My Life and Rugby he tells his story for the first time, including the full inside story of EnglandÆs 2019 World Cup campaign. Eddie Jones is one of the most experienced and decorated coaches in world rugby. His career has spanned four World Cups; from losing to England in the 100th minute in 2003, working with South Africa when they won in 2007, and causing the greatest upset in 2015 when he masterminded the Japanese defeat of South Africa. Since taking over as head coach of England in 2015 Eddie Jones has masterminded a complete revival of the national team. He has won the Six Nations Championship back-to-back, including EnglandÆs first grand slam in a generation, their first ever whitewash of Australia, as well as taking them on their longest ever winning streak. In his explosive autobiography Jones shows how his fiercely competitive attitude, his love of coaching and his philosophy of the game were formed while growing up in a tough working-class suburb of Sydney as a small half-Japanese kid, playing schoolboy rugby alongside the legendary Ella brothers. Learning from the extreme highs and lows of his own playing career û the numerous successes playing for Randwick and New South Wales but also the painful disappointment of never playing for Australia û he shows what it takes to be the best in the world and how everything he has learnt about the game on and off the pitch has gone into plotting EnglandÆs route to the top of World Rugby. My Life and Rugby is the story of one of the most compelling and singular figures in rugby, told with unflinching honesty this is the ultimate rugby book for all fans of the sport.
