Coronavirus weekly figures: 27 Aug - 2 Sept In the week of 27 August – 2 September, there was 967 new cases reported in Shropshire – a slight decrease of 14% on the previous week. However, figures are expected to rise once more now children are back in school, young people are returning to college and university, and people have returned to work after summer breaks. During this time, there were a further 8 deaths – taking the total over the last month to 21. There were 38 beds in our local hospitals occupied by COVID-19 patients, a rise of 4 on the previous week's figure. Vaccination clinics at Shrewsbury College campuses Shrewsbury Colleges Group is hosting a series of pop-up vaccination clinics across its sites in a drive to get 16 and 17-year-olds vaccinated at the start of the new school term. Bob the bus was at the English Bridge campus on Thursday and is set to visit other sites next week. Students and teachers can get the Pfizer vaccine, no appointment needed. Please note: 16 and 17-year-olds are currently only eligible for the first dose, as per the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation guidance. Walk-in clinic at The Buttermarket in Shrewsbury on Saturday 11 September The Buttermarket in Shrewsbury is hosting a pop-up vaccination clinic this weekend in a bid to get nightclub-goers vaccinated. Anyone aged 16 or over can head to the club on Saturday between 2pm and 6.30pm to get the jab. First and second dose Pfizer will be on offer (2nd dose only available to 18+ and must be at least 8 weeks after the 1st) – no appointment needed. If you can't make it, you can head to one of the other clinics across the county. Full details available here. Emily Sweeney got the jab at RJAH this week Six-time British record holder, Emily Sweeney, is encouraging others her age to get vaccinated, after she got the first dose at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital this week. The 17-year-old from Ellesmere said: "For me, there are a whole load of reasons why having the vaccine is important to me. Not only is it protecting me, it's protecting my parents, grandparents, other members of my family, as well as my friends." Another reason she chose to get vaccinated is to make travelling abroad easier. Take a test, even if you have mild symptoms With cases remain high in Shropshire, it is vitally important to get a PCR test if you have any symptoms of COVID-19, even if they are mild. All care home workers must be vaccinated by 11 November The deadline to be vaccinated for anyone working or volunteering in a care home is fast approaching. By 11 November anyone working in a CQC-registered care home in England must have had 2 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine unless they have a medical exemption. Staff have until 16 September to get their first COVID-19 jab to ensure that they have enough time to get fully vaccinated before the new regulations come into force.
