NGS Bank Holiday gardens open for charity

Bumper Bank Holiday week of NGS gardens open for charity

Six beautiful Shropshire gardens will be open in the coming 7-10 days over the Bank Holiday week for the National Gardens Scheme which raises money for cancer and caring charities such as Macmillan, Marie Curie, Hospices UK, Parkinson's UK and many others. Including a bumper plant sale at Edge Villa on Wednesday 25th May.
 
Wednesday 25th May: 
2 acre garden at Edge Villa (morning opening from 9.30am to 1pm); pretty cottage-style garden with its plant-packed borders and large productive garden plus bumper sale of hundreds of home-grown plants at very reasonable prices with all proceeds going to NGS charities.  Admission: £4 for adults, free for children; located at Edge, nr Yockleton, 6 miles SW of Shrewsbury. Light refreshments available.

Also, 5 acres of mature ornamental and productive gardens at Goldstone Hall hotel near Market Drayton (open 2-5pm).  Double herbaceous border, acre herbal walkway and vast productive garden.  Refreshments served in the delightful oak pavilion. Admission: £4.50 for adults, free for children. Also open on Wednesday 1st June (2-5pm).
 
Sunday 29th & Monday 30th May:
Longner Hall:  Open on Sunday 29th May only (2-5pm); parkland designed by Humphry Repton, with stunning views over the Severn valley; woodland walks, colourful herbaceous borders, old moat pond and 1-acre walled garden. 4m SE of Shrewsbury at Atcham; Admission: £4 for adults, free for children.  Refreshments available.

Upper Shelderton House:  Open on Sunday 29th and Monday 30th May (2-5pm); Shelderton, nr Clungunford (north of Ludlow), mature 6½ acre garden with huge collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and specimen trees. Large sweeping lawn, streams and ponds. Newly designed kitchen garden.  Admission: £4 for adults, free for children.  Why not combine a visit to the area with Walcot Hall? 

Walcot Hall:  Open on Sunday 29th & Monday 30th May (1.30-5.30pm); at Lydbury North (4m SE of Bishops Castle); woodland walks (dogs welcome on leads), mile-long lake, arboretum full of rhododendrons and azaleas; Sir William Chambers' famous clock towers; Russian wooden church, grotto and fountain.  Teas served in the magnificent ballroom. Admission: £4 for adults, free for children.  Why not combine a visit to the area with Upper Shelderton House?

Tuesday 31st May: Unique hillside garden at Brownhill House, Ruyton XI Towns (open 1.30-5pm); many changes have been made in the garden, astounding visitors with the sheer construction of this cascading garden which sweeps down to the River Perry.  Don`t be put off by the steps, if you can manage just 5 of  750 steps, you can see a lot of the garden from the top and enjoy the stunning view..  As in all NGS gardens, children should be closely supervised.  Colourful terraces, woodland paths and large kitchen garden.  Admission: £3.50 for adults, free for children. Refreshments available.  Open by arrangement, May to end of July.

Visitors to NGS gardens will have the pleasure of knowing that their entrance fee is supporting many vital cancer and nursing charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospices UK and the Carers Trust.
