Two new gardens and five old favourites open TODAY and next few days for the National Gardens Scheme in Shropshire

It WILL stop raining today!  So why not get out and about this coming week and visit some of Shropshire's most beautiful gardens, open for the National Gardens Scheme, raising money for cancer and nursing charities:
TODAY: Friday 17th June 2016 (2-6pm): Ruthall Manor: (Ditton Priors, nr Bridgnorth). This favourite garden with NGS visitors is open on Friday 17th June (2-6pm).  The garden, with its mature collection of specimen trees, has intimate sections, linked by winding paths.  The striking borders are colourful in June with clematis and roses scrambling through the garden. There are also gravel and art garden sections and a ha-ha.  The beautiful, natural old horse pond is the highlight of the garden with its multitude of primulas and irises to enjoy.  Admission is £4 for adults, free for children.  Refreshments available.  There is also a jigsaw puzzle sale, with all proceeds to NGS charities.

Saturday 18th June 2016: 21 Steventon Terrace: (Steventon New Road, Ludlow). Affectionately known as "The Secret Garden", this ½ acre town garden is an amazing sight to see, divided into sections, the garden is full of roses, herbaceous borders, a terraced vegetable garden and Mediterranean style terrace garden.  This three-time winner of the "Ludlow in Bloom" competition, has been delighting visitors for many years, who marvel at how much can be created in a town garden.  Open from 1-5pm on Saturday 18th June; admission is £3.50 for adults, free for children; plants and refreshments available with all proceeds to NGS charities.

Sunday 19th June 2016: NEW - The Old Vicarage:  Ash Magna, nr Whitchurch.  Opening for the first time for the National Gardens Scheme on Sunday 19th June (1-5pm). The renovation of this 2-acre Victorian vicarage garden started in 2011 and there are still plans for the future.  The garden has a large formal rose garden, at the height of its beauty in mid-June, mixed colourful borders and a walled kitchen garden full of produce.  There are informal areas to complement the formal areas around the house including an orchard, wildflower meadow and wildlife pond.  The large front lawn once hosted village fetes and is now used as a croquet lawn by the village!  This garden is certain to become a firm favourite with NGS visitors in the future.  Admission is £3, children free; refreshments available.

Sunday 19th June 2016: NEW Whistlewood: Boraston, nr Tenbury Wells.  ¾ acre traditional orchard setting with an emphasis on wildlife, this garden, opening for the first time for NGS on Sunday 19th June (2-5pm) is sure to delight visitors who enjoy mingling amongst naturalistic planting and appreciating the wildlife it attracts.  There are natural ponds, meadows – including an additional 4 acres of 140 year old mature orchard full of wildflowers and birds – many rambling roses at their best in June, herbaceous borders and kitchen and cutting garden.  There is much for children to enjoy at this garden – and they have free entry - so families, including well—behaved dogs, are most welcome.  Admission is £4 for adults; refreshments available.

Sunday 19th June 2016: Drayton Fields: Wollerton, nr Market Drayton.  This 3½ acre garden opened for NGS last year to great acclaim and is sure to be a popular place to visit on Sunday 19th June (1.30-5pm).  With beautiful specimen trees, including some stunning Wellingtonias, lovely plant-packed herbaceous borders, a rose garden, lavender parterre and many other interesting areas to explore, this is a lovely garden to visit on a summer's afternoon.  What could be better than sitting having a home-made afternoon tea surrounded by "partly organised floral, scented chaos"!  Admission is £4 for adults, free for children; plants also on sale.

Sunday 19th June 2016: Millichope Park: Munslow, between Ludlow and Bridgnorth.  This classic estate in the beautiful Corvedale is a popular NGS destination, and in June its wildflower meadows will be at their height of beauty.  Open on  Sunday 19th June, (2-5pm) visitors (including dogs on leads) can roam the 14 acres of lakes, streams, cascades and woodlands and visit the newly-restored 19th century glasshouses in the walled garden, home to the Bouts Viola collection.  A stunning place for all the family to visit on a summer's afternoon.  Admission is £5 for adults, free for children.  Refreshments available.

Tuesday 21st June 2016; The Croft: Ash Magna, nr Whitchurch.  This delightful green space is a popular NGS garden for families and children with plenty to see and do.  As well as beautifully planted borders, herb banks, winding paths, fruit terraces and bee and butterfly borders, there is a productive garden and poly-tunnel full of produce – a little bit of everything to enjoy.  Children will particularly delight at the dipping pond (with a surprise), woodland hideaway, chickens and other four-legged lawnmowers!  Open on Tuesday 21st June (1-5pm) and every Tuesday until the 23rd August.  Admission is £3 for adults, free for children. Refreshments available.

Visitors to NGS gardens will have the pleasure of knowing that their entrance fee is supporting many vital cancer and nursing charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospices UK and the Carers Trust. The Scheme also supports Parkinson's UK and, for the first time this year, the MS Society.  Earlier this year, the National Gardens Scheme gave £2.73m to the charities it supports from monies raised in 2015.
