Qube exhibition celebrates local ‘Sweethearts and Sons’
A fascinating and insightful exhibition of World War One local history is being staged at Qube Gallery, Oswestry. The Gallery has re-created an Edwardian parlour as the setting for a captivating collection of artefacts, stories and memorabilia from local people including items from the Welsh Guards Museum at Park Hall and Oswestry Town Museum.
The exhibition, which forms part of the nationwide commemoration of the Great War, has been collated over the last nine months after Qube invited local people to come forward with family items and stories. Central to the exhibition is a collection of letters from young men serving across the Channel. Qube volunteer, Elaine Payne has helped to transcribe the letters so visitors can read them easily. She said, “It’s been an absorbing experience and amazing privilege to type the handwritten letters. You realise that these are real people talking and the little details of their lives and it’s fascinating. It gives a real insight into what life was like, both at home and in France.”
Ellesmere based artist, Sandra Thomas has also helped to curate the exhibition. Her collection includes a beautiful collection of decorative heart-shaped pin cushions which were made by the troops for their sweethearts back home. She said, “So many of the objects here have a fascinating story tell. One of the pieces is a silver cigarette box with a bullet hole that saved the life of the soldier who had it in his pocket.”
The Sweethearts and Sons exhibition is on display in the main gallery at Qube until 5th May 2014. Qube is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturdays 9.30am – 12.30pm and is free admission, all are welcome to browse around the gallery.
