What’s On at The Willow This March

 

Wishing you all a happy and sunny Spring from The Willow Gallery Team. We have an action packed Spring programme of workshops, art classes events, live music, exhibitions and Willow Eatery treats. Please scroll down for further information.

 
Exhibitions
Painting with Words – Saturday 8th March to Saturday 19th April
Preview – Friday 7th March. 7pm
 

A special exhibition running in connection with the Oswestry Lit Fest, a celebration of the written, spoken and sung word. This open exhibition will celebrate the influence and inspiration of literature and language on the visual arts. Artists have explored this interesting and inspiring topic in a broad range of styles, materials and interpretations.
Featuring ‘Grimm (a quartet of perspectives)’ the work of contemporary enamellers Kevin France and Maggie Furmanek, inspirational jeweller/metal worker Sara Piper Heap, and evocative mixed media artist Judith Harrison, exploring The Grimm Fairy Tales.

A selection of workshops and courses will take place throughout the exhibition.

Drawing & Poetry Workshop with Leo Donaghy & Mia Cunningham
Saturday 15th March. 1pm to 3pm 
A relaxed afternoon of poetry and art with Shropshire’s Young Poet Laureate, Mia Cunningham and professional artist Leo Donaghy.
Free workshop in connection with Oswestry Lit Fest 
 
Make a Sculpture in a Day with Darren Fraser and Beatriz Cabrera.
Saturday 22ndMarch. 10am to 4pm
Learn how to make your own unique plaster sculpture. Each process will be covered from the first steps of making an armature to mixing different plaster types and using a variety of tools to the final touches of polish and colouring to create your desired patina. This step by step course will be taught through demonstrations, individual advice and assistance by professional artists and sculptors Beatriz Cabrera and Darren Fraser (Castle Foundry). This workshop is suitable for complete beginners, those wishing to develop their skills or learn new sculpture techniques. Please feel free to bring any form of visual inspiration for your project.
£85 including all materials.
 
Felt Book Making Workshop with Susan Mulcock and Rebecca Bailey
Saturday 29th March. 10am to 4pm
Create your own unique felt book cover, using a variety of wet felt making techniques, with professional felt maker Susan Mulcock. To create the internal book, simple book binding techniques will be explored with book maker and writer Rebecca Bailey, you can create traditional pages or something very imaginative! Put it all together to create an inspiring and functional piece of artwork.
All materials will be provided.
In connection with Oswestry Lit Fest.

Dry Point Printmaking Workshop with Amy Sterly  
Saturday 5th& Sunday 6th April 10am to 4pm  
Rare opportunity to explore this exciting printmaking technique. During this two day drypoint etching workshop you will learn the basics of drypoint printing- similar to etching but without the acids and use Amy’s mobile printing press to make greetings cards, fabric designs, collage, a fine art print for your wall or anything else that takes your imagination!  Use expressive line techniques and without solutions or acids, just card & ink, you will be surprised at the effects you can create!

Enamelling Workshop with Pat Thatcher 
Saturday 12th of April. 10am to 4pm
Create your own  unique piece of jewellery or enamel art with expert guidance and tuition from professional enameller Pat Thatcher. Learn how to clean and prepare the metal, sift and wet lay enamel and make your own unique piece of jewellery using enamel, scriaffitto, millifiori beads, stencil or stamping.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners with no previous artistic experience and those wishing to develop their skills or learn new techniques.                   
£45 including all materials.
 
After School Art Workshops - Starting Tuesday 4th March
Every Tuesday from 4 to 5.30pm (6 to 13years)
Have fun experimenting with a variety of artistic techniques including weaving, ceramic painting, felt making, printmaking, fabric painting, moasic and much more! With expert tuition from visiting professional artists.
£6 per session or £30 for 5 sessions. Including all materials

Art Classes & Courses

Art History Course with visiting Guest Speakers       
Starting Thursday 6th March 6pm to 7.30pm                                             

Sessions: 6th March, 13 March, 20th March, 27th March, 3rd April and 10th April
Professional guest speakers will give an insight into a wide range of art historical subjects, the artists’ inspiration, techniques, influence and historical context. Subjects include Dadaism, Irish Art, The History of Portraiture, Kitchener Poster, Natural History Illustration.
£55 for 6 sessions. 
 
Flower Painting with Tereska Shepherd
Starting Tuesday 11th of March.  10am to 4pm.                                                  

8 Sessions: 11th March, 25th March, 8th April, 13 May, 20th May, 10thJune, 24th June, 8th July.
This inspiring, practical painting course is ideal for those wishing to capture the wonderful colours and forms of flowers in a variety of styles and media, whilst further developing their observational and painting skills.
Throughout the course colour mixing, mark making and compositional skills will be developed through exploration a variety of techniques and study of historical and contemporary artists. Demonstrations, group discussions and individual advice and assistance will be given.

Mould Making Sculpture Course with Darren Fraser                                             
Starting Tuesday 25th March. 6.30pm to 8.30pm                                                                

4 Sessions: 25th March, 1st April, 8th April, 15th April
This practical course will cover the theory, process and application of mould making with professional artist Darren Fraser from The Castle Foundry who studied at the Elizabeth Frink School of Figurative Sculpture and the British School in Rome.  Learn simple methods of mould making which will allow you to create a one off replica from a clay model or object. This course is ideal for those who have created sculptures in previous courses and wish to create a replica, or are interesting in casting from found objects.
£90 including materials for 4 sessions

St. Patrick’s Ceilidh with The Devil’s Chair Ceilidh Band

This lively group of experienced musicians & singers blend their own styles into a toe tapping and memorable selection of tunes. Professional guidance for dancers. Featuring Andy Jones (fiddle), Andrew Norman (concertina/vocals), John Evans (guitar/vocals) and Hilary Evans (bodhran/caller.)

The Bookshop Band - Oswestry LitFest Event

Quirky, inventive, melodic and magical. A sell out at last year’s Oswestry LitFest, this talented trio promise some fabulous new literary songs & maybe a new world exclusive song!

Moving Meditation with Classical Music – Tai Chi with Alan Jeffries
Starting Sunday 9th March. 10.30 to 12pm.

Cultivate Strength & Flexibility in Body & Mind. Improve co-ordination, posture, balance awareness and focus. Qi Gong and Tai Chen Movement. During these relaxing Sunday sessions we will cover: The Eight Pieces of Silk, Sixteen Step Dynamic, Qi Gong by Grandmaster Shen, Five Element Qi Gong, 6 Healing Sounds, The Tai Hui, Chen soft circle work and silk reeling.                                                                                                                                               Alan Jefferies is a registered instructor with the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain. Song Writing Session with Professional Musicians Eddie & Jenny Miller
Saturday the 22nd of March. 4.30 to 6.30pm

 
Professional musicians and writers Eddie and Jenny Miller will give an insight into their song writing techniques, inspiration and how they evoke the feeling of a song through the accompanying music. The work of some of the great song writers will be discussed. Throughout this informal session there will be the opportunity to explore techniques for song writing and to create your own lyrics. No musical knowledge or experience required, just enthusiasm!  All welcome.

'Pizza & Pudding Night' at Willow Eatery

The first event of ‘Evenings at the Eatery'. We will be serving tasty home-cooked pizzas and delicious desserts, as well as trying out a selection of cocktails for the evening too.
