Irena White, World War I resaearch

IRENA WHITE, LOCAL HISTORIAN of Ruyton XI Towns World War I

Particular thanks must go to Irena White, who has worked tirelessly to research details of the men listed on our War Memorial.

Irena was able to find where the men lived, their families, their service details, where they died and where they are buried - all that searching takes a lot of time, as anyone who has embarked on a family history project will tell you.

It is planned that the men`s stories can be made into a booklet and displayed in the local history corner in the church.

Without Irena`s stories about the Men of Ruyton who were lost, celebrations to commemorate the end of the First World War would have been missing that vital ingredient.

It was a great achievement to find relatives of the fallen to be with us on Sunday night.

People might be interested in searching out the war graves at the west end of the churchyard.

Driver BENJAMIN JONES, died 27 October 1918 aged 40

Private CHARLES HENRY HANMER, died 1 April 1920 aged 28

Air Mechanic ERNEST LLOYD, died 9 April 1920 aged 28

The 'Today - Ruyton Remembers' was then put together and circulated by Yoland to the Mailing List and Margaret Lycett to the Facebook community.
