It's no exaggeration to say I have a novel to thank for my love of the sea and, in particular, for my love of sailing. When I talk to sailors, they almost inevitably mention Swallows and Amazons as one of the influences that first drew them to the water. Many of them are, even as adults, still looking for that same sense of adventure and freedom they felt when they first read Arthur Ransome's classic novels of the Walker and Blackett children. My introduction to sailing in literature wasn't through Ransome, though; it was Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea cycle that first captured my imagination.

It was my sister who first taught me to read, before I even went to school. She'd plonk me amongst a motley assortment of teddy bears, soft toys and dolls, in a circle and read Peter and Jane to us. I'm sure they're horribly dated now for I haven't seen a copy in years but for those of you too young to remember, they had one or two short sentences in GIANT BIG FONT on one side of the page and a rather naff illustration on the facing page. At the bottom, it would say 'New word – dog' or whatever. They've been much mocked (I particularly love Miriam Elia's spoofs) but I'll always be grateful to them for kick-starting my reading.

While a silver-sequinned jumpsuit called The Iris is the perfect attire to celebrate the publication of my new YA novel, We Are All Constellations*, it's not the only outfit I'll be wearing to mark the occasion. So too will I be donning vest, trainers and shorts. The second look may be far less spangly but running 31k in a shimmering all-in-one might raise a few too many eyebrows, and what we really want to raise is money.
