As we say our last goodbyes to summer and look ahead to the autumn we have a wonderful programme of entertaining films to warm your hearts and enlighten your minds.

Penelope Cruz & Antonio Banderas take us on a wickedly delicious satire deep into the world of movie making with the award winning 'Official Competition', our Guest Curator, Tatenda Jamera offers up another gem of African cinema with the poetic Somalian love story 'The Gravedigger's Wife' and in a future where dreams are taxed we get caught up in the dreams of an eccentric, ageing artist in the strange and wonderful 'Strawberry Mansion'.

In our documentary strand we take a kaleidoscopic journey into the creative world of David Bowie with 'Moonage Daydream' and encounter one of the world's biggest and most dangerous cold water waves with young surfer Ben Larg in the stunning 'Ride the Wave'.

Nt Live offer us a "rollicking good night out" with 'Jack Absolute Flies Again' Richard Bean's new adaptation of Sheridan's 'The Rivals' and we step into Regency London in the "engagingly silly and self aware romcom" 'Mr Malcolm's List'. Sam Rockwell & Saoirse Ronan are the perfect pair of misfit cops investigating a mysterious murder in theatre land in 'See How They Run'.

For the half term we set off on another big adventure in the family friendly animation 'Tad The Lost Explorer and The Curse Of The Mummy', George Clooney & Julia Roberts reunite on screen with ill fated plans to scupper their daughter's wedding in the romcom 'Ticket To Paradise' and we visit the glamorous world of 1950's Paris fashion houses in the delightful 'Mrs Harris Goes To Paris'.

This award-winning romantic comedy drama from Germany looks at what we want from life and love.   Alma, a scientist at a Museum in Berlin is persuaded to participate in a study to get funding for her research. For three weeks she must live with a humanoid robot, Tom, played to perfection by none other than Dan Stevens! Tom is programmed to be every woman's perfect partner, but does anyone actually want a 'perfect' partner?!  With rave reviews across the board, this looks an absolute charmer. Be honest, who doesn't want Dan Stevens to run them a bath?!

"With a thought-provoking concept brought to humorous life by a pair of well-matched leads, I'm Your Man is an AI rom-com whose intelligence is anything but artificial" Rotten Tomatoes?

Official Competition (15)

Wednesday 5th October  7:30pm

Antonio Banderas' film star and Oscar Martínez's stage actor vie for the attention of Penélope Cruz's wayward director in this filmmaking satire.

Independent cinema darling and Cannes Palme d'Or-winning filmmaker Lola Cuevas (Cruz) is approached by ageing, ailing business mogul Humberto Suárez (José Luis Gómez) to make a film that he hopes will be his legacy for the world.

Intended as an adaptation of a much-loved literary work, Cuevas has more experimental intentions than some turgid piece of heritage cinema. Given carte blanche over the casting – Suárez's only condition was that she choose 'the best' – she pits acclaimed but stiflingly snobbish 'Actor' Ivan Torres (Martínez) against handsome but superficial screen icon Felix Rivero (Banderas), believing that the inevitable tension between the two can only help the film's dynamic. She couldn't be more right, as the three gather for a nine-day rehearsal that sees each pushed to their wits' end.

"With its blend of scabrous honesty and self-skewering silliness, this may be the most perceptive film about the movie-making business since Tom DiCillo's Living in Oblivion" **** Wendy Ide - The Guardian

"An uproarious comedy that's also deliciously well-performed... this Spanish-language gem cleverly gets away with being both roast session and sneaky celebration at once." ***** Tim Robey ' The Telegraph

Directors: Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn
Spain/Argentina 2021

A rollicking new comedy by Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors) and Oliver Chris (Twelfth Night).

Featuring a cast including Caroline Quentin (Jonathan Creek), Laurie Davidson (Guilty Party), Natalie Simpson (Three Sisters) and Kelvin Fletcher (Emmerdale).

July 1940. After an aerial dog fight, Pilot Officer Jack Absolute flies home to win the heart of his old flame, Lydia Languish.
Back on British soil, Jack's advances soon turn to anarchy when the young heiress demands to be loved on her own, very particular, terms.

Emily Burns (The Comeback) directs this spectacularly entertaining new version of Sheridan's The Rivals resetting the action in a rose-tinted vision of WWII life, where proud, brassy music wafts through the air, cakes are baked and plans to hang victory bunting are being made five years early.

"A Rare Blast Of Sunshine" ***** - Daily Mail

"It was just what I, and the audience, needed, a rollicking good night out at the theatre, and Jack Absolute doesn't just fly, in parts it soars. Expect a West End transfer!" Paul T Davies - BritishTheatre.com

Ride The Wave (12A)

Wednesday 26th October 7:30pm

"If he gets it right, he joins an elite group. If he gets it wrong, the consequences are terrifying."

Having participated in competition surfing worldwide, 14-year-old Scottish, under-18 champion, Ben Larg, is prepared to put his life on the line to ride one of the biggest and most dangerous cold water waves in the world at Mullaghmore, Ireland. If he gets it right, he joins an elite group. If he gets it wrong, the consequences are terrifying. Danger, opportunity, and dilemma collide, propelling Ben and his family towards an unknown destiny.

"Ride The Wave is a breath of fresh air. Tense, moving, and raw, it is a celebration of talent, resilience, and some top-class parenting." — Loud & Clear Magazine

"This is a film that sensitively eavesdrops on family life, as soaring drone shots provide the visual attractions of dramatic coastlines, blinding white beaches kissed by blood orange sunsets and mountainous waves crashing to shore. However Robertson's skill lies in maintaining a warm human touch throughout. " — Screen Daily

"Robertson's film is excellent at teasing out all the different things driving Ben towards his date with destiny – the desire to prove himself, the need to evolve as a surfer, his deep-seated fascination with giant waves. Its greatest achievement, though, is the way it also manages to be a film about parenthood." — The Scotsman

"Beautifully shot, Ride The Wave is not just a documentary about surfing. It's also a coming-of-age story, set at the very edges of the world where waves are for the taking." — The Reviews Hub

"A heartwarming and endearing tale of young ambition. Family and individuality, Robertson's documentary is one all about overcoming obstacles and finding your own way in the world." — View of the Arts "It is enough to chill the heart of any parent." — Screen International

Ride the Wave is a Screen Scotland funded feature documentary. The project has also received support from FOCUS, by Film City Futures and Scottish Documentary Institute and an Edinburgh International Film Festival Works in Progress Award. The film won the young audience award at the Galway Film Fleadh and was selected for the Great8 Showcase at Cannes 2021 and is released in the UK by Cosmic Cat.

Tatenda is the founder of MAONA ART (an independent community cinema & gallery commited to showcasing the best of African cinema and art)

Through captivating cinematography this film brings a unique portrayal of cinema on Somali terms to the screen. It provides a unique opportunity for UK audiences to bear witness to a Somali love story.

A few words from our Africa In Focus Season Guest Curator

Maona is an independent cinema  committed to showcasing the best of cinema and art from Africa and African creatives from all over the world. Its conception was due to my personal desire and passion to see everyone experience the beauty of African art and film. Growing up in a continent that I am so proud of, I wanted to create something that would allow people to experience the rich heritage of this place.

Maona, pronounced ma-ona is a Shona word from Zimbabwe (my birth country) meaning you have seen. I chose this name as it encompasses the vision and goal for Maona, which is for people to see and experience. I am very proud of my heritage and I am confident that Maona will be the place where people can come, experience, enjoy and value this incredible culture.

Many Thanks

Tatenda

The aim of this support is to give everyone in the UK the opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of British & international independent films and without this support we would not be able to offer such a wide range of independent & world cinema.
