Seven wonders of the Oswestry hills

A special event on Sunday 7th September will give walkers of all levels of fitness the chance to explore the beautiful border country of the Oswestry hills.  This charity walk, arranged by Shropshire Wildlife Trust’s Oswestry Branch, offers a choice of three routes: 3, 7 or 14 miles, taking in the wildlife-rich country between the Trust’s seven nature reserves in the area.  The 7 and 14 mile- routes are signed, so you simply look out for arrows, while the 3-mile option is a guided walk.

The routes follow public rights of way across rolling farmland between woods, fen, fields and common land, enjoying spectacular views and scenery. Hundreds of different kinds of flowers grow on the thin mantle of turf covering these hills, along with a marvellous diversity of butterflies, moths and dragonflies.

The paths are meticulously signed and dogs are welcome. Delicious home-made cakes and tea are included in the entry fee.   A minibus will transport those walking the 7 mile route back to the start.

Walkers need to book in at Trefonen Village Hall between 8am and 10am for the 14 mile route and between 8am and 11am for a choice of 7 mile walks (some people walk half the route one year, the other half the next).  Bring lunch and plenty to drink and wear appropriate clothing. Strong footwear is recommended.

Out of respect to the various landowners along the route, please keep dogs on leads. Dogs get their own treat of dog biscuits when they get to the refreshment points.

Entrance fees are £8 if booked and paid in advance or £10 on the day for the longer walks and £4 in advance/£5 on the day for the 3 mile walk. If you wish to walk with a group and a guide, please book in at Trefonen ready to set off at 9am.

All profits from this event are spent on Shropshire Wildlife Trust’s conservation projects in the local area.

For full details see www.shropshirewildlifetrust.org.uk.  Advance bookings for the two longer walks can be made online or by phone (01743 284280 to book); advance bookings for the shorter walk by phone only.  Or you can simply turn up on the day.
