Welcome To Our April Newsletter ... Yes, We are still Here!

First & Foremost we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has expressed their concerns and given kind words of support to us over the possible future of kinokulture.

The good news is that we are now working in consultation with the Independent Cinema Office and
our colleagues at the BFI Film Audience Network to build a framework on how we can hand the cinema over into community ownership. Look out for more news on this in the future as we will be holding a public meeting in the coming months to explain how this will work and encourage expressions of interest.

In the mean time we will continue to bring great cinema to you throughout this year from our current home at 9 Arthur Street.

Throughout April we have a wonderful selection of one off screening events from across the globe including a new documentary about the Dalai Lama Never Forget Tibet, the wonderful Iranian film Winners & a special event around the new documentary Fashion Reimagined. Our mainstream programme includes Oscar winner The Whale, the family friendly animation Epic Tails, British Rom Com What's Love Got To do With It? And following sell out screenings at Borderlines Film Festival the return of Allelujah & Women Talking to our screen.

We also bring you the quirky and loveable animation Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, the high octane craziness of Cocaine Bear and the beautifully animated Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman based on short stories by
acclaimed Japanese author Haruki Murakami plus two more great films from the new team at Oswestry Film Society Bad Day at Black Rock and She Said.

Come along and join us for a deep dive into the wonderful world of cinema!

Bad Day At Black Rock (PG)
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Tuesday 4th April 7:30pm

A film high on suspense sees a one-armed stranger stepping off the train at the title-cited Black Rock, a tiny town possessing a terrible past that it desperately wants to keep secret.

The great Spencer Tracy in the role of the stranger creates huge suspicion among the antagonistic and complicit locals. As Tracy digs deeper and the tension builds, the wrongs that have been done gradually become clear.

Though essentially a crime-drama with the subtle feel of a modern-day western, this 1955 film was one of the first to recognise  discrimination against Japanese-Americans in the second world war that the U.S. would rather have swept under the carpet.

Continuing our season of well-known names in lesser-known roles, Tracy leads a cast that includes other big-hitters like Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine and a young Lee Marvin.

Tracy's career spanned 40 years-plus at the top, often most notably for his acting partnerships with Katherine Hepburn.

But his performance in Bad Day At Black Rock is a tour de force in a taut film that from start to finish doesn't waste a second of its run-time.

Please note the film starts at 7:30pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings

Run Time: 1 hour 21 mins

Marcel The Shell With Shoes On (PG)

Wednesday 5th April 1:30pm & Thursday 6th April 7:30pm

Everyone loves Marcel

When struggling filmmaker Dean (writer-director Dean Fleischer Camp) moves into an Airbnb, he quickly discovers that he is not alone. Marcel (Jenny Slate), an adorable one-inch-tall shell, already lives there with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and their pet lint, Alan. Once part of a sprawling community of shells, Marcel and Connie live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy.

Taken with his unlikely new friend, Dean starts filming Marcel and his grandmother, igniting a meteoric rise to internet fame that changes their lives forever. But will Marcel's newfound sense of possibility and a throng of superfans be enough to track down his long-lost family?

Soulful, whimsical and intricately crafted, MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON is the feature adaptation of Dean Fleischer Camp and Jenny Slate's popular series of short films and New York Times-bestselling books, and marks the big screen debut of the internet's most beloved mollusc.

"A joyous juxtaposition of quotidian, vérité-style dialogue and fancifully inventive visuals that hits a tragicomic sweet spot."  Mark Kermode - Observer

"Delicate, yet resonant." Little White Lies

"The animation, by the New York-based Chiodo brothers, is both witty in its make-do-and-mend aesthetic (the sentient Shreddies are a hoot) and sometimes dazzlingly intuitive. You don't question the truth of it for a moment..."  Robbie Collin - Telegraph

A stellar cast head up this multicultural, very British rom-com from the producers of Bridget Jones's Diary and Love Actually.

How do you find lasting love in today's world? For documentary filmmaker Zoe (Lily James), swiping right to find Mr Right has only delivered bad dates and funny anecdotes, much to her opinionated mother Cath's (Emma Thompson) dismay. For her childhood friend and neighbour Kazim (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents' example and opt for an assisted marriage with a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a different approach to finding love.

Sunday 16th April. 2:00pm (subtitled for the Hard Of Hearing)

After our sell out screening at Borderlines Film Festival in March this timely film returns to our screen.

Adapted by Call the Midwife's Heidi Thomas from Alan Bennett's 2018 play of the same name, Richard Eyre's Allelujah is a warm and spirited story of old age and UK community activism.

A stellar cast including Jennifer Saunders, David Bradley, Derek Jacobi and Judi Dench make up some of the very idiosyncratic residents of a small Yorkshire hospital ('the Beth'), specialising in geriatric care. When the hospital is threatened with closure, its supporters decide to fight back, galvanising the local community and inviting a news crew to film their preparations for a concert in honour of its most distinguished nurse (the stern but kind Sister Gilpin). What could possibly go wrong?

She Said (15)
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Tuesday 18th April 7:30pm

Film mogul Harvey Weinstein's fall from grace has been total, from all-powerful movie producer and sexual predator to spending the rest of his life behind bars. This is the story of how the New York Times unearthed more than a dozen women - previously ignored or simply swept aside - who had agreed to accuse Weinstein of sexually harassing or assaulting them. Many other women in the film industry subsequently reported similar experiences with Weinstein over many years.

SHE SAID is a potent but sensitive drama following two NYT female reporters who doggedly cut through the defences of the apparently untouchable producer. This shocking story also serves as a launching pad for the #MeToo movement, shattering decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault. There'd been whispers and allegations about what Weinsten had been up to from the 1970s, but money, power and others turning blind eyes meant he went untouched.

Excellent performances from the cast bring out the best in this "David and Goliath story that reverberated around the world" (Evening Standard). It's a film that's a testament to the power of proper investigative journalism, and to the courage of women who suffered at Weinstein's hands and came forward at personal risk — to their careers, reputations and well-being.

Please note the film starts at 7:30pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings

Run Time: 2 hours 9 mins

Never Forget Tibet (PG)

Wednesday 19th April  7:30pm

Returning to the Tibetan borderlands for the first time since 1959, the Dalai Lama recounts his escape across the Himalayas in this documentary Inspired by the book 'An Officer and His Holiness' by Rani Singh.

Winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, the Dalai Lama has over 19 million Twitter followers. In addition to his international popularity, for Tibetans, the Dalai Lama has always been the "Most Precious One." His undisputed, divine status as Tibet's former religious and temporal ruler dates back along 13 Dalai Lamas and several centuries. It was a peaceful kingdom until the invasion by Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 1950.

China invaded because it wanted complete control of autonomous Tibet to strengthen its western flank, among other reasons to do with minerals and water. The Chinese had grown frustrated with the power and influence held by the 14th Dalai Lama, so they used various tactics to try to isolate and destroy him. They decided he was standing in the way of their territorial ambition so they decided to try to terminate his lineage. The destruction of a culture, language, people began here and continues to this day.

For over 60 years the Dalai Lama has campaigned for peace and nonviolent political change. He is most consistent in his message of love and compassion. This film reflects the Dalai Lama's message. China has forced its rule upon Tibet constant fear, millions of Tibetans have been killed, imprisoned, or tortured.
By the late fifties PLA soldiers had flooded Tibetan strongholds. A fearsome network of spies and informers helped its masters create a vice-like grip on the Tibetan leadership. Finally, the Chinese military advanced and encircled the Dalai Lama's hilltop summer palace. PLA guns, cannons, tanks and heavy artillery were aimed directly at his living quarters. By March 1959, Tibetans were so terrified for the life of their leader that they mounted a rebellion against the Chinese overlords, surrounding the Dalai Lama's palace and placing themselves between him and the PLA soldiers.

The Dalai Lama was in danger; even his trusted wise oracles told him so. He escaped in the dead of night with his closest advisors, tutors and some family members. Told for the first time on film in the Dalai Lama's own words with the Indian political officer who lead him to safety.

Women Talking (15)

Don't miss this truly powerful drama as it returns to our screen after our sell out screening for Borderlines film Festival in March

A group of Mennonite women gather together to debate a course of action in Sarah Polley's adaptation of Miriam Toews' bestseller about abuse and solidarity.

Women in the closed community are experiencing bruising and battering when they wake from sleep. Some are pregnant. The elders claim it is God's punishment for their sins. But a sighting by one of their number reveals the truth: the assaults come from their own menfolk. In a sunlit barn, a delegation of women exchanges views: do nothing, stay and strive to change the status quo, or do they leave? Dressed plainly and alike, each woman – played by a hugely gifted cast – delivers a different, sharply articulate and impassioned argument.

Journeyman - the Art of Steve Dilworth
A book by Georgina Coburn

For those of you who came along to our premiere screening of Stuff The World Is Made Of the beautiful documentary about Harris based sculptor/maker Steve Dilworth we have some exciting news to share.

After 5 years of research, Georgina Coburn's book Journeyman – The Life and Art of Steve Dilworth is ready for publication. The plan is to release the book in time for Dilworth's autumn exhibition at the Pangolin Gallery in London.

"When I began my research in 2014, I wanted to answer the question of what makes a Dilworth? His work is powerful and its effect on many people, lasting and profound. In Dilworth's objects, as so often in life, what is most valuable is hidden inside. His art holds nature close, in ways our global consumer culture has too long discarded. I think what Dilworth's art connects us to has increasing urgency. The intention behind it and the way that his work is integrated into peoples' lives is unlike anything else in contemporary art. Dilworth's work is a living example of why art matters and acknowledgement of his importance in the history of Art is long overdue. My intention is to shine a light on his uncompromising, visionary work, opening up a wider conversation about the value of art outside the art world." Georgina Coburn.

The book can be pre ordered for £35.00 (including P&P).
